World's tallest building completed in Taipei.

TAIPEI, Oct. 17 Kyodo

Taipei on Friday celebrated the completion of the world's tallest building, a bamboo-shaped skyscraper standing half a kilometer tall downtown that knocks Kuala Lumpur's 452-meter Petronas Towers out of the top spot.

''The Taipei 101 building has now become the city's new landmark, which fully demonstrates our ambition to bring Taipei to the world,'' Mayor Ma Ying-jeou said at a ceremony attended by engineers and VIPs.

He hoped the 508-meter building, to be completely furnished by the end of 2004, will draw foreign companies to the capital and boost economic activity.

The project, initiated almost seven years ago and located in the eastern downtown area, was erected on a 30,278-square-meter site and has total floor space of 357,721 sq. meters.

It has set new standards for high-rise buildings and incorporates the most advanced technology from around the world, according to Taipei Financial Center Corp.

For example, housing a big shopping mall and offices for up to 12,000 people, the 101-story structure has the world's fastest double-decker elevators, with 34 shuttles that can take passengers to the 90th floor in 39 seconds.

Moreover, an 800-ton wind damper at the top of the building will significantly reduce lateral wind stress and reduce the duration and intensity of lateral movement caused by earthquakes.

The overall structural design will enable it to withstand the strongest earthquakes and resist winds of more than 216 kilometers per hour, the company said.

The Taipei 101 Building, however, will be superseded when the Shanghai World Financial Center in China is completed in 2007.
