World's Largest Ship, Carnival Destiny, To Make First Call At Newport News

MIAMI, Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Carnival Cruise Lines' newest ship, the MS Carnival Destiny -- the largest cruise ship ever built -- is slated to call at Newport News, Va., Nov. 15 and 16.

The $400 million vessel will operate two one-night cruises from Newport News under a charter agreement with Virginia-based CI Travel. A $135 million, 53-location travel company, CI Travel marketed the two introductory voyages to the general public and both sailings sold out within seven hours.

The 2,642-passenger Carnival Destiny stretches nearly three football fields in length, and at 232 feet tall towers 55 feet above the Statue of Liberty. At 101,000 gross registered tons, Carnival Destiny is fully 30 percent larger than the biggest cruise ships sailing today, and its 116-foot beam makes it the first cruise ship too wide to transit the Panama Canal.

But size is not the only attribute that distinguishes this one-of-a-kind vessel. Guests sailing on the Carnival Destiny will experience more on-board amenities than ever, including three double-decked restaurants, 17 bars and lounges, four swimming pools, seven whirlpools and a state-of-the-art 15,000-square-foot Nautica spa. The vessel has a nine-deck atrium, a show lounge that can accommodate 1,500 people for Las Vegas-style shows and an amazing 214-foot-long waterslide.

And greater size translates into larger public rooms and cabins, giving Carnival Destiny the highest passenger-space ratio -- 38 -- of any mass-market cruise vessel. In addition, 61 percent of the ship's cabins are outsides with either a balcony, large ocean-view windows or a floor-to-ceiling glass wall. Following its East Coast introduction in Boston, New York and Norfolk, the Carnival Destiny will depart on its inaugural Caribbean voyage Sunday, Nov. 24, from the Port of Miami. The ship will sail year-round from Miami on a seven-day alternating eastern and western Caribbean itinerary. Carnival Destiny calls at San Juan, St. Croix and St. Thomas on its eastern route; and Playa del Carmen/Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on western sailings.
