Workshop on Ore Microscopy begins.

ISLAMABAD, April 26, 2010 (Balochistan Times): As a part of its academic support and human resource development programme, the Geoscience Advanced Research Laboratories - research arm of the Geological Survey of Pakistan, Islamabad organized the 3rd National Training Workshop on Ore Microscopy from April 26-30 in collaboration with Pakistan Science Foundation. Ten participants from Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, Lahore, NED University Karachi, Bahria University Islamabad and GSPs own regional offices are participating in this five-day Training program. Speaking at the inaugural session, Dr. Imran Khan, Director General, GSP hoped the participants will learn various techniques on ore microscopy. The workshop is being conducted by Dr. Rehan ul Haq Siddiqui, Asif N. Rana and Naghmah Haider. It aims at providing basic knowledge on ore microscopy, so that the participants could be able to identify the most common ore mineral and study their texture and paragenesis. The course deals in preparation of polished ore sections, principals of reflected light polarizing microscope, optical properties of ore minerals, common ore texture and their significance, and paragenetic studies. Giving an outline of the training workshop in the inauguration ceremony, the Chief Instructor and coordinator of the workshop, Dr. Rehanul Haq Siddiqui, Deputy Director Geolabs told that the mineral resources are considered as the backbone of economy of any country. Their systematic exploration and development bring socio-economic progress and help in achieving the self-reliance. Many modern and most sophisticated instruments are used for laboratory study of ore minerals, which include EPMA, SEM, XRD and DTA/TG. Oremicrocopy is one of the classical, but most useful techniques to identify the opaque mineral by reflected-light polarizing microscope. It has tremendous applications in the field of mineralogy, economic geology, rock magnetism, mineral dressing and metallurgy. It is also implied for the study of opaque minerals in igneous metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.
