This guide explains what employers are required to do when an employee requests an accommodation for religious beliefs or disability. Just as important, it explains what employers are not required to do. The section on disability accommodation explains what a disability is under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), what kind of reasonable accommodations might be required, and what constitutes undue hardship for the employer. The section on religious accommodations explains what a religion is under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, covers reasonable accommodations and undue hardship, and addresses harassment. Appendices provide sample policies, regulations and guidelines, examples of low-cost accommodations, and information on tax credits and funding sources for disability accommodations. There is also a resource directory for accommodations. Fishman is a practicing attorney specializing in workplace law. Magill has written numerous books and articles on employment law.
