The fire was under control by 6.30am but firefighters will need to stay there throughout today.

Dean Fowler, who lives with his family in the block, spoke to the BBC aboutthe moment he learned about the fire.

A resident on the top floor of the building, Dean woke up in the night to banging on his door.

He said: "I then heard someone screaming 'there's a fire, get out', and I just got my boys and went."

Dean had only been living in the building for three weeks and he lost "everything" in the fire.

But he added: "we're alive, we're breathing, that's all that matters."

Residents both in the block and in the surrounding properties have been taken to a community centre in the area.

Darren Nicholson was among those people.

He said when he woke up he heard "crackling". Opening the curtains he saw the blaze and said he "got himself and the family out".

Darren said the fire alarms were going off in the community areas but not in his own flat. He believes the blaze started "on the balconies" but that has not been confirmed.

Speaking in the aftermath of the fire, the London Fire Brigade has said: "We have not treated any patients, however we remain on the scene as a precaution."

Sutton Council are currently "supporting anybody that needs help" with officers in the area.
