Worcester Park fire: Dramatic pictures as huge fire destroys block of flats; 125 firefighters are at the scene and members of the public have been warned to avoid the area.

An entire block of flats in Worcester Park is alight this morning (Monday, August 9) after a devastating fire ripped through the building.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 1.27am and by 3am 20 fire engines and around 125 firefighters were tackling the huge blaze.

Dramatic pictures show that the whole block of flats in Sherbrooke Way has been torn through.

The ground, first, second and third floors of the building and the roof of the building are alight.

London Fire Brigade's 999 control officers have taken 29 calls on the fire, which can be seen for miles around.

Fire crews from New Malden,Sutton, Mitcham, Surbiton, Wimbledon, Kingston, Wallington and other surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage but remarkably it appears that nobody was injured in the blaze.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called at 1.34am today to reports of a fire at a residential address on Sherbrooke Way, Worcester Park.

"We sent an incident response officer, an ambulance crew, two medics in cars and our hazardous area response team (HART).

"We have not treated any patients, however we remain on the scene as a precaution."

Properties at the block of flats are reported to sell for up to [pounds sterling]1.1 million.

Station manager Graham Adams, who is at the scene, said: "This is a challenging fire and firefighters are working hard to bring the blaze under control.

"Firefighters will remain on scene for a number of hours and we would urge people to avoid the area if possible."
