Woodchuck Draft Cider digs into market.

Since its introduction to New England in June 1991, Woodchuck Draft Cider now accounts for over 22-percent of the country's total draft cider segment, according to its producer, the Joseph Cerniglia Winery.

After a year of distribution, Woodchuck has accrued 35 distributors in 16 markets including New York, Texas, Chicago, Michigan and Southern California.

"Until last year, no one produced a branded cider in the United States," noted the Vermont winery's president Joseph Cerniglia. "Ciders from the United Kingdom dominated the category, selling mainly in English and Irish pubs in Boston and New York.

"We have concentrated on supermarkets and wine stores to build consumer awareness and trial," Cerniglia went on. "The total sales of domestic and imported ciders in the United States increased a whopping 93 percent."

"We are pleased to see that all cider sales are up," commented vice president of sales and marketing Barry Blake. "We believe that Woodchuck Draft Cider has been leading this growth by exposing more people to the refreshing, crisp cider taste by our supermarket strategy."
