Won over by Dana's personality-plus.

The Methodist Choir's special guest last year was the emerging young singer Hayley Westenra. This year's guest made her name many years ago and in recent times has probably been better known for her involvement in Irish politics.

But Dana's pleasant singing voice and personality were in good form.

During her first set she sang Christmassy numbers with a bubbly choir from Kirkheaton Primary School. It was obvious that Dana had put in plenty of effort rehearsing with the youngsters; this was evident from the seamless way that she and the children interchanged on the lyrics of Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer. The guest singer's sincere pleasure in performing with these local kids was touching.

During her solo numbers - which included Eurovision winner All Kinds of Everything - Dana was accompanied by an electric piano and a backing tape. It would have been greatly preferable if she had dispensed with the latter.

Such artificiality really had no place in an event which was a celebration of live music making and Dana would have been perfectly capable of singing attractively with just a piano accompaniment.

The other guests of the Methodist Choir, conducted by Alan Brierley, were the Welsh singers of Cor Godre'r Eifl. Their performance of Ganwyd Crist I'r byd was one of the choral highlights of the night.

Also on stage was the Sellers International Youth Band, conducted by Craig Radcliffe. Of their numbers, the theme from Pirates Of The Caribbean proved to be an excellent brass band piece, showing off the band's tone quality.

In Hymn for Africa, Craig Walker's flugel horn solo was beautifully executed.
