Women who stalk. (Clinical Capsules).

Female stalkers are less common than male stalkers, and generally differ in motivation and behavior, said Rosemary Purcell, M.Psych., of the Victorian Institute of Forensic Mental Health, Victoria, Australia, and her colleagues. In this comparison of 40 female and 150 male stalkers, the female stalkers knew their victims in 95% of the cases, compared with 79% of cases involving male stalkers (Am. J. Psychiatry 158[12]:2056-60, 2001). A significantly larger percentage of women telephoned their victims (98%), compared with men (73%). However, only 50% of the women followed their victims, compared with men (78%). Although women stalkers aren't less of a threat to their victims, they are often taken less seriously, the investigators said. No significant differences were found in demographics or psychiatric status.
