Women Builders lobby Congress.

The Women Builders Council, Inc., a newly formed advocacy group promoting the concerns of women business enterprises in the building sector, lobbied Congress last week on behalf of its members.

The WBC aims to create a powerful lobby for women business owners in New York State's building and construction industry through advocacy, education and technical assistance initiatives.

One of the WBC's main focuses will be on influencing legislation affecting women business enterprises through regular lobbying of key policy makers in Washington, DC, Albany, and New York City. Major campaigning issues will be to increase procurement opportunities for WBE's, to give greater recognition of the capabilities of emerging firms, to ensure fair and reasonable fees and proper payment from government contracting agencies and to elect an Ombudsman for WBE's at city, state and federal levels to monitor public contracts awarded to them.

A WBC delegation was in Washington, DC, on September 29th to discuss these issues with senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, senator Charles E. Schumer, congresswoman Nydia Velazquez and congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney. Meanwhile, a trip to lobby officials in Albany is being scheduled for October.
