Women & Infants Names Director of Research Administration.

Providence, RI, April 22, 2010 --( Large academic institutions have a wide variety of research going on at any given time. Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island is no exception - with researchers, physicians and scientists working in the lab and at the bedside on projects that cut across all medical disciplines.

To coordinate all such research efforts, Women & Infants recently created the position of director of research administration and appointed Michael Mullahy, MBA, of Mansfield, MA, to the role.

"This position was created to bring together all the various research efforts ongoing at Women & Infants under one cohesive structure," explains Constance A. Howes, president and chief executive officer of the hospital. "This position is responsible for the administrative component of the research enterprise at Women & infants."

This, Mullahy notes, includes: cultivating funding opportunities; managing federal and non-federal grants and contracts; producing policies and procedures for the effective and efficient management of research funding; training and educating all principal investigators and research staff; and ensuring the hospital complies with all governmental and sponsor-specific rules and regulations for research endeavors.

One of Mullahy's first tasks will be to create a Research Advisory Council at Women & Infants. Comprised of key members of the hospital's research community and senior leadership, the Council will work with Mullahy and set an agenda for coordinated efforts.

Mullahy came to Women & Infants from Partners HealthCare System, Inc., in Boston, where he was associate director of research revenue. While there, he was engaged in the implementation of automated systems that coordinated reimbursement for more than $500 million of annual, federally-funded expenses, and converted a manual sub-award billing system to an automated version.

He is a graduate of St. Michael's College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration, and Suffolk University, where he earned a master's degree in business administration.
