Women's Mini Marathon runners have slammed race organisers over a free goodie bag containing dishwasher tablets and laundry detergent.

Of the thousands of women taking part in the Dublin race, many were left seriously unimpressed when they picked up their free goodie bag after finishing.

Along with some chocolate and rice to replenish their energy, the bags contained cleaning products from Persil and Sun Expert.

Many took to Twitter to voice their feelings and disappointment in the race organisers, reportsDublin Live.

Hannah Hillyer tweeted: "So lads as well some chocolate and rice in the goodie bag today at the women's mini marathon I was lucky enough to receive a DISHWASHING TABLET and some PERSIL."

Fiona Kenny said: "Women's mini marathon goodie bag had a dishwasher table and some washing powder in it, which I think I'll feck at the next person who says "Well done, geeeerls"."

Gaye Edwards added: "VHI WMM thought this was appropriate for the goodie bag, not impressed."

In a statement a spokesperson for the marathon said; "The race organisers of Women's Mini Marathon are happy to provide a Race Bag to all participants every year.

"This is one of the most popular parts of the event every year, and we strive to give all participants a selection of free, quality products.

"These range from food and drink items to household and lifestyle items. Our sponsors have no input into the contents of the race bag.

"We understand that some participants were unhappy with the inclusion of dishwasher tablet and laundry detergent samples in the race bag, equally we have received positive feedback from the majority of the 30,000 women who took part in the event.

"We have included similar items in previous years, which have been well received, but understand the concerns raised by some women given the context.

The 2018 Vhi Women's Mini Marathon was won by Lizzie Lee from Leevale A.C. in Cork in a time of 34.18. Laura Shaughnessy from Dundrum South Dublin AC was second across the finish line in 34.30, and Siobhan O'Doherty from Borrisokane AC secured third place in 34.55.

John O'Dwyer, Chief Executive, Vhi Group, said: "Vhi is proud to support this terrific event and would like to thank all of those who have worked so hard to make it a success.

"We want to extend our congratulations to the thousands of women that took part today. The atmosphere and sense of camaraderie amongst the participants is incredible."
