Woman killed in car-train collision in Kanazawa.

KANAZAWA, Japan, March 8 Kyodo

A woman was killed Saturday morning when her minivehicle collided with a limited express train at a crossing on the JR Hokuriku Line in Kanazawa, police said.

Killed in the 8:10 a.m. collision was Kazuyo Shimotaka, a 69-year-old from the capital city of Ishikawa Prefecture, who was driving to work, the police said.

West Japan Railway Co. said one of about 600 passengers aboard the Thunderbird No. 10 bound for Osaka from Uozu, Toyama Prefecture, suffered minor injuries.

The train's driver said later he hit the brakes to avoid a collision after seeing the minivehicle cross the crossing.

JR West temporarily suspended train services between Matto and Nishikanazawa in Ishikawa, halting operations of four other limited express trains and canceling other train operations, including the limited express Raicho No. 16 bound for Osaka from Kanazawa.
