Woman dies after being hit by car on A56 Edenfield Bypass; Police later arrested an unrelated driver for trying to go through the cordon in the wrong direction.

A woman has died after being hit by a car on the Edenfield Bypass near Ramsbottom.

Lancashire Police were called at 11.35pm on Saturday night after a VW Polo driving on to the main northbound carriageway of the A56 struck a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, a woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are now working to identify her.

The road was closed in both directions, close to the junction with the M66 for several hours late last night.

Sergeant Adam Dawson, of the Road Policing Unit, said: "Sadly this collision has resulted in a woman losing her life and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision or who has any information which could assist to contact us."

Anyone with information should call 101 quoting log number 1656 of Saturday, September 8th.

While dealing with the aftermath of the incident, police arrested a different driver - unrelated to the accident - who attempted to drive through a cordon the wrong way.

They were found to be over the drink drive limit.

The force wrote: "Driver arrested for providing a positive breath test after driving through the closed A56 the scene of a serious RTC and driving in the wrong direction."
