Witnesses tell of extremely distressing scenes as man killed and four injured in crash; A neighbour told how people climbed into the car to perform first aid on the victims.

Witnesses told of extremely distressing scenes after a fatal car crash during the early hours of the morning inWest Derby.

A man in his 20s died after a crash involving a Ford Fiesta and Ford S-Max private hire taxi on Princess Drive.

A 25-year-old man who was driving the Fiesta was arrested at the scene. He was later taken to hospital.

A 19-year-old woman from the same car was taken to hospital for treatment for serious injuries.

Two men who were in the S-Max at the time of the 1am crash were treated at the scene for slight injuries.

Locals have told thehow a neighbour climbed into the Fiesta after the crash to try and help the injured woman.

A neighbour said: "I was up watching telly and heard this massive smash. I went out straightaway.

"The Fiesta was on its side, and the taxi was still rolling back. One of my neighbours is a medic and he had climbed into the Fiesta.

"I saw him trying to help the young woman who was still inside the car.

"The lad who died was trapped under the Fiesta."

Another neighbour said that driver of the Fiesta was very distressed after the crash.

She said: "He was hysterical and had some blood on his trousers. I heard him shouting some stuff. He was led away by police.

"I think the girl was in a very bad way. I feel so sorry for them - that a night out with friends ended that way."

Police put a cordon in place on the section of Princess Drive between Rothbury Road and Finch Road after the fatal accident.

The cordon had been cleared this morning.

Roads Policing Sergeant Ged Farley said to the ECHO: "This is clearly a tragic incident in which a man has sadly lost his life and others have been injured.

"Specialist officers will be supporting the victim's family and all of those affected as we seek to discover exactly what happened.

"We know that people saw or heard this collision and at this early stage, we want to speak to all of them, including anyone who was passing by at the time or immediately before, and could have captured vital evidence on vehicle dashcam or home CCTV."
