The Humko Chemical Division of Witco has expanded and modernized pilot plant facilities at its manufacturing complex in Memphis, TN, to support the production of oleochemical derivatives used by many industries. Among the features of the enlarged pilot plant are the installation of a 500-gallon reactor vessel, new distillation units and flaking roll, and a modern control room computerized to monitor intermediate reactions. Its operations are fully integrated to duplicate the processing capabilities of the commercial-scaled production plant. Six reactors give the pilot unit capacity to scale-up materials made by laboratory processes in semi-commercial amounts from 30 to 2,500 pounds. It can also supply product in drum amounts for orders that do not require a full production run. The pilot plant is one of a number of production and capacity improvements for fatty acids and food emulsifiers totalling more than $10 million that have recently been made at the Memphis complex.
