Wisconsin senator wants more beer exports to Canada

U.S. Senator Bob Kasten (R-WI) said last week he wants Wisconsin to export more beer to Canada because "it will mean more jobs."

In a letter to U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador Carla Hills, Kasten urged the U.S. to "get tough with Canada" regarding its trade practices with the U.S. brewing industry.

"The issue is of tremendous importance to Wisconsin's beer industry - particularly our microbrewers," Kasten said. "It has cost us jobs and it has contributed to our trade deficit with Canada."

Kasten also noted that "Canadian provincial liquor boards flagrantly discriminate against U.S. beer in the areas of listing, distribution and pricing. These practices have persisted and expanded in violation of Canada's obligations under both the GATT and U.S.-Canadian Free Trade Agreement.

"We ought to send a clear message to Canada and our other trading partners that we take their commitments seriously and will not tolerate their abrogation," Kasten told the USTR. He also pointed out that the G. Heileman Brewing Co., based in Wisconsin, is one of the two largest U.S. exporters of beer to Canada. "American jobs are on the line here, and clearly, we must protect this industry against unfair treatment by our trading partners," Kasten wrote. "I urge Ambassador Hills to act forcefully and promptly."
