Winning the war on yobs; ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR: City praised by Government tsar.

Byline: By Neil Elkes

BIRMINGHAM is winning the war against anti-social behaviour after being praised by the Government's anti-yob tsar.

Government Respect tsar Louise Casey issued a list of 40 so-called Respect Areas which were leading the war against yob culture, including Birmingham and Sandwell.

The city is using measures such as ASBOs, parenting classes, family intervention orders and anti-truency campaigns to turn the tide against the neighbours from hell who blight estates.

Coun Jim Whorwood, chairman of community safety, said the announcement shows Birmingham is making progres against anti-social behaviour.

He said: "This announcement ensures that the work to tackle, not tolerate, anti social behaviour in Birmingham will continue. The award of the Respect Action Area status gives further opportunities to develop more effective programmes, to tackle the behaviour of the worst families, to ensure parents have the opportunity to develop parenting skills but also to continue to use appropriate interventions such as ASBOs and Injunctions when they are needed."

The Respect areas will now be given a slice of pounds 6 million to further develop anti-yob measures and show other local authorities the way forward.

Government Respect tsar Louise Casey, said: "It's about getting parents to be more in control in their own homes and keeping up the unrelenting drive to tackle anti-social behaviour."

She added: "These are the areas that are doing parenting classes and family projects that tackle the really, really difficult people in our communities.
