Winning stories.

This year, the Shrine of the Black Madonna Cultural Center and Bookstore held its first Write Is Might short story contest for unpublished African American writers. The winner of the grand prize, the Barbara Nandi Martin Award, is The Haunting by Afefe Maat of Houston, Texas). (Read it online at www.bibookreview.com/shrinebookstorecontestwinner.)

The winner was chosen by a panel of three judges: author Heather Neff, publisher and agent Denise Stinson, and young-adult author Dana Davidson. Rukiya Curvey-Johnson, national director of the Shrine of the Black Madonna, announced the winner.

CraZy by Carol George-Rucker of Cincinnati, Ohio, won second place; and third prize was taken by The Last Ship by Vicki Green of Brownstone, Michigan.
