Winning it at the death.

I go to great lengths to try to make accurate predictions, but I wouldn't go as far as Gerolamo Cardano, a famous 16th-century gambler.

Cardano was also a celebrated doctor, mathematician and astrologer. From those professions, though, he was always short of money, and he managed to make ends meet by gambling.

Cardano wrote Book on Games of Chance in which he sowed a seed that would grow into the theory of probability. Today we know that understanding probability is an essential pre-condition for successful betting.

As a young man, Cardano predicted he would die at the ripe old age of 75 on September 21, 1576. He did. However, some historians say he reached that date in perfect health and then poisoned himself so his prediction would come true.
