Wills: I was a victim of surf rage.
It happened when he broke the cardinal rule of never stealing someone else's wave - and was whacked on the head by an angry fellow surfer on a Fife beach.
William said: 'Surf etiquette is that when you're going for a wave, the first person on it basically takes it and you should come off.
'I didn't really notice what was going on around me. Half way up this guy comes whizzing past me and hits me on the back of my head and says: 'My Wave.' 'I was left spluttering in the surf.'
William was pictured surfing off a beach near St Andrews, where he is studying geography at university.
The prince agreed to let the private snaps be published. His interview was part of the deal whereby the media agrees to leave him alone while he studies.
It was the first time he had surfed in Scotland's cold waters.
He said: 'It was a bit like putting your head in a freezer when you went under.'
Meanwhile the prince has invited Scots rockers Franz Ferdinand to the Buckingham Palace Christmas party.
Lead singer Alex Kapranos and the rest of the band will interrupt their US tour to join over 400 guests at the event on December 7.
A Palace insider said: 'Prince William suggested the group because he is a fan.'
