Hoedown tonight will aid ancient forests

The Cascadia Wildlands Project will present its second annual Hoedown for the Ancient Forests at 6 p.m. today at Avalon Stables, 80143 Hazelton Road, Cottage Grove. Portland's Foghorn Stringband and caller Bill Martin will provide the music and directions for square dancing. The event is a fund-raiser for the organization, which is dedicated to preserving forests, waters and wildlife. Admission is $15 to $100 in advance or $20 to $100 at the door. A shuttle will leave from the Growers Market, 454 Willamette St., at 5:30 p.m. For more information, call 434-1463.

Free hip-hop night

set for Cozmic Pizza

Cozmic Pizza (Eighth Avenue), 199 W. Eighth Ave., will host a free hip-hop show sponsored by the Eugene group the Committee for Counter Military Recruitment at 8 p.m. today. Portland's Womb Dialectic will provide music and spoken word poetry, and Mario Africa will speak about hip-hop, resistance and the military. Local hip-hop artists will also be featured.

Poetry Slam contests

begin once again

The Eugene Poetry Slam will get under way Saturday with an open round featuring Taylor Mali and Dawn Saylor. Subsequent open rounds are scheduled for Nov. 15, Dec. 13, Jan. 10, Feb. 7 and March 6. Playoffs will take place April 10 and 24, followed by the finals on May 15. Juggler, tap dancer take stage on Oregon Coast

Professional juggler Rhys Thomas will perform with tap dancer/sax player Michael "Shoehorn" Conley at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Newport Performing Arts Center in Newport. Tickets to "Jugglemania With Shoehorn" are $20, $15 and $10. The box office number is (541) 265-2787.
