Wil power: Michelle Krusiec shines in Saving Face as Wil Pang, a dutiful daughter who's also gay.

Actress Michelle Krusiec loves a challenge, so she was eager to be cast as Wilhelmina Pang in Alice Wu's Saving Face. She was drawn to the script for "the strength of Alice's writing," says Krusiec. "I am a writer too, and Wu left no stone unturned." Thirty-year-old Krusiec reveals that she also auditioned for the role of Vivian Shing. "I'm much more like Vivian in real life," says the vivacious actress. "But I wanted a stretch. And admittedly, it took me a while to figure Wil out. Then it dawned on me that I should take some cues from watching Alice. After all, these characters came from her." Krusiec says she started imitating some of Wu's mannerisms to get into Wil's sweetly anxious frame of mind.

Saving Face is the first American film to feature a love story between two Chinese women. Krusiec acknowledges that many Chinese people tend to perceive homosexuals "as the worst thing you can be." But the actress, who has been exclusively in heterosexual relationships, doesn't share that perception. Working on the film, she says, "made falling in love with a woman seem conceivable to me."
