Widmer Brothers Brewing Co., a Portland brewer, announced that it would buy a minority stake in the Midwest's second-largest craft brewery.

Widmer Brothers Brewing Co., a Portland brewer, announced that it would buy a minority stake in the Midwest's second-largest craft brewery. Widmer will own an undisclosed fraction of Goose Island Beer Co., based in Chicago--second in its region only to Boulevard Brewing Co., based in Kansas City, Mo. The move also indirectly extends the marketing reach of the nation's No. 1 mainline beer company, Anheuser-Busch Companies Inc., into the upstart craft beer segment, which has shown strong growth in the past two years. Goose Island also announced that the deal would enable the brewery to use the wholesaler network of Anheuser-Busch, a minority owner of Widmer, to distribute Goose Island beer.
