Wide-men pursuit seems to make sense.

Byline: Barry HORNE

JANUARY is said to be the most depressing month of the year, and I think I might have stumbled across the exact reason for this - the endless stream of football transfer rumours.

The fact that SKY, in particular, have endless hours of airtime to fill inevitably leads to the regurgitation of rumours and half truths, and supporters, as is their right, tend to lap it all up.

I've never gone for it, personally. But I was interested to see the type of player that Everton are targeting at the moment.

Both Aiden McGeady and Thomas Ince are wingers in the truest sense of the word. And I am led to believe that Roberto Martinez is very keen to add both to his squad in the summer.

I can see why. If there are areas in the Blues squad that need reinforcement, then it is on the wings and, in my opinion, in attack.

McGeady and Ince, talent-wise, appear to fit the bill. I must confess I have some reservations with both in terms of attitude and mentality, but Roberto knows both players well, and I trust him to do his homework thoroughly on both, and to get the best out of them should they eventually sign.

Financially, too, the deals make sense. McGeady would be a free transfer, and Ince's fee would be decided by a tribunal and would certainly not break the bank.

We have seen this season that having a quick, direct player in your side can give you and extra dimension.

Everton are blessed with excellent technical players who can pass and weave patterns, but we have seen with Gerard Deulofeu that it can change a game if you inject it with pace and running ability.

There's still a long way to go, of course. I always say a transfer is never done until the player is stood holding a shirt with the manager. But the early signs are promising.
