Wicks extends its venture capital franchise with acquisition of Venture Reporter.

In a deal that further enhances its position as a leading provider of venture capital and private equity information services, Wicks Business Information LLC (WBI) recently acquired the Venture Reporter database and related Rising Tide Studio products from MCG Capital Corporation.

Andrew Jacobson, managing director at MCG, told NL/NL that, in a very complex transaction, they "retired our investment at the same the company was sold."

The Venture Reporter Gold Pass database, industry reports, and Venture Reporter magazine track venture capital investing in addition to larger merger and acquisition activity in the U.S.

"We are gaining a high-quality modestly priced database and report product line that we can offer to smaller venture firms and service providers, as well as entrepreneurs," WBI founder and CEO Douglas J. Manoni said. "This rounds out our ability to fulfill a broad spectrum of information needs to the venture community."

The Venture Reporter product line will become part of WBI's Alternative Investor (AI) business unit, whose premier database, VentureSource, is popular among large venture firms and service firms. AI's flagship newsletter, The Private Equity Analyst, goes to the private equity and venture capital markets.

Jason McCabe Calacanis will continue to manage Venture Reporter products and becomes director of entrepreneurial products at Al. "Entrepreneurship is still thriving although the businesses being started today pass more rigorous standards than the ones from the dot-coin era," he said.

Calacanis was the founder of Silicon Alley Reporter and is a widely recognized commentator on technology and entrepreneurship.

Alternative Investor provides information products for private market professionals and leverages the research strengths of VentureOne with the editorial expertise of The Private Equity Analyst and The Venture Capital Analyst. Its databases, publications, conferences, directories, and customized research offer investors and industry service providers the comprehensive information they need to make informed investment decisions and stay abreast of industry trends and events.
