Why we need a Minister for North; MP calls on the Government to act quickly.

LABOUR MP Nick Brown last night called for the Government to appoint a Minister for the North East to tackle the region's problems.

He spoke out as new figures revealed the soaring rate of unemployment among young people.

Mr Brown, MP for Newcastle East and a former Cabinet Minister in Tony Blair's Government, said: "Total unemployment is steadily rising in East Newcastle.

Even more depressingly, the long-term rate is steadily growing.

"The most important measure to turn this around would be for the Government to appoint a Minister for the Region, to spearhead private sector job creation initiatives to broaden and deepen our region's private sector economy."
