Why being the best of friends is simply swell.

GAL pals Sara Cox and Zoe Ball are two girls hip to the new trend in friendship.

They rely on each other for support, but also for fun. They even shared a hen night and, without doubt, their bond will remain as strong after marriage.

Spice Girl Emma Bunton and All Saint Nicole Appleton are also great mates and look just as happy when they're together as when they've got a handsome hunk on their arm. The definition of a Swell Girl is a woman who enjoys her life as it is and is more than content to be herself.

In fact, she reckons that, when combined with her best friend, she's the best thing going.

Swell Girls don't leave it to the men to provide the jokes. Every self-respecting thirtysomething should have at least one good joke up her sleeve. And don't give us the one about not being able to tell 'em - being a wallflower is well out of date.

A modern gal is also a great hostess. She doesn't hog the limelight and bore the guests with funny stories about herself. Nor does she call the whole thing off if her napkins don't match.

Instead, she keeps a weather eye open for shy guests to be brought out of their shells and glasses to be re-charged. Writers Rowley and Rosensweig suggest, as a novel party gift, to dispense with the traditional bottle of hastily-bought Chardonnay and bring along a Polaroid camera.

That way, you can become the party's official photographer and give everyone a personal memento to take home with them.

Swell Girls, you see, are creative - as well as confident - little creatures.
