Who Is Meghan Vogel? Meet The Ohio Track Star Who Carried Arden McMath Across The Finish Line [VIDEO].
Meghan Vogel is the Ohio track star who won a 1,600-meter race and then carried a competitor across the finish line in another run.
The Ohio teen had already placed first in the 1,600 and was participating in the 3,200-meter race when competitor Arden McMath fell just meters from the finish line, according to the (http://www.springfieldnewssun.com/springfield-oh-sports/high-school-sports/wls-state-champ-lends-a-helping-hand--1385613.html) Springfield News-Sun .
Vogel noticed McMath falling and quickly helped her across the finish line, even placing the fallen runner across the finish before she crossed herself.
McMath and Vogel finished 14th and 15th respectively and were both given a standing ovation at the end of the race.
While the event is making national headlines, Vogel says she just acted out of instinct.
"If you work to get to the state meet, you deserve to finish no matter who you are. I was going to make that happen for her no matter what," Vogel told (http://www.wdtn.com/dpp/news/local/logan/runner-victorious-by-finishing-last#.T85hCbKDooF) WDTN News .
McMath, speaking with the (http://www.daytondailynews.com/dayton-sports/high-school-sports/runner-inspires-others-with-act-of-kindness-1386396.html) Dayton Daily News , expressed great gratitude towards Vogel, along with disbelief.
"I just couldn't believe she'd done that for me," McMath told the paper. "We're all in it together as distance runners. Everyone is trying to do their best. It's a lot harder on your body than a lot of the other races."
ESPN is reporting that despite Vogel's heroic rescue, she was so exhausted from her previous event that she didn't have enough energy to completely commit to the second race.
"I think fate may have put me (in last place) for a reason," (http://espn.go.com/high-school/track-and-xc/story/_/id/8010251/high-school-runner-carries-fallen-opponent-finish-line) Vogel told the station .
