BLONDES are having a serious moment, with celebrities lightening up their locks.

June is Blonde Appreciation Month, claims one leading hair care company. Why? Well, they stand out in a crowd. Supposedly have more fun. Sometimes to steal the spotlight.

And probably because the John Frieda Sheer Blonde team wanted a reason to celebrate.

To this day, Marilyn Monroe remains the ultimate blonde, her platinum waves became her trademark and turned her into the world's most coveted sex symbol.

So it's little wonder that stars these days are still inspired to reach for the bottle for an attention-grabbing to dye for.

1 CAREY 10/ 10 MULLIGAN BRIT actress Carey Mulligan gave her hair a high-impact colour update when she switched from her natural mousey shade to light, bright platinum for The Great Gatsby.

One of our favourite looks from the promotional tour was her choice for the red carpet at the Cannes Opening Ceremony last May.

Carey, 27, looked stunning in a plunging pink satin gown and the she teased her long blonde hair out of its trademark bun for the prestigious opening performance.

Unsurprisingly all eyes were on the actress, who showed off a little sideboob in the backless Dior gown and cemented herself as one of the style icons for summer '13.

EMILY BLUNT AND DREW BARRYMORE GAL pals Drew Barrymore and Emily Blunt had a blonde moment recently and got their hair done together.

New mum Drew took the plunge and went platinum, again. After gradually transitioning from her dark brunette hue for a few months, the star went to a West Hollywood salon with her pal, British actress Emily Blunt for some girl time - five hours in foils, to be specific, while both lightened up their locks.

And both stars seemed to have a little fun with the paparazzi lurking outside the salon, striking silly poses and getting fits of the giggles. This is the blondest either star has been in quite some time.

RESULT: We're loving the lighter hues just in time for summer 10/ 10 SOFIA VERGARA MODERN Family star Sofia Vergara traded in her brunette tresses for a sunshine-friendly golden look last March.

The 40-year-old Colombian stunner posted the finished results on Instagram so her fans could let her know how they felt about it. And she excitedly thanked her hairdresser as she uploaded the pouty snap.

She wrote: "Blond ambitions!! Gracias to the amazing Kelly Klain,' I'm ready for summer!" RESULT: Nos encanta, Sofia. Blonde makes her stand out from the crowd.

ANNE HATHAWAY HOLLYWOOD'S golden girl Anne Hathaway debuted her new super bleach blonde at the Met Ball 2013.

Channelling the Costume Institute Gala's punk theme, the actress swapped her brunette pixie crop for a bleached blonde style that was quiffed at the crown and swept back off her face.

She told Vogue: "I don't know that you could tell it by looking at me, but Debbie Harry was [my inspiration]."

We didn't much care for this new fierce Anne, 30, but fortunately she has already returned to her old brunette chop.

Anne's been rocking super short hair after she was forced to cut it while filming Les Miserables, a film that later won her an Oscar.

RESULT: We prefer her more Hepburn style.

DEMI 5/ 10 LOVATO DEMI Lovato - who's known for her sudden hair switch-ups (pink tips, anyone?) -showed off her new blonde colour last May.

The Heart Attack singer, 20, also trimmed her previously brunette tresses into a shorter bob, pushing her bangs to the side.

The X Factor US star revealed her secret to keeping her strands strong is a lot of luck.

"I have no idea [how it stays healthy]," she said.

""My hair is really soft and really long right now and I just went even blonder, so I have no clue.

"I guess it's the salon that I go to is really incredible - Nine Zero One in Los Angeles - and they know how to lighten hair without damaging it.

"I also have some pretty awesome deep conditioner, and I try not to wash my hair as much as possible maybe every two or three days."

RESULT: We would rather Demi stayed on the dark side.

LEIGH 7/ 10 LEZARK FASHIONISTA, DJ and model Leigh Lezark known for her dark, gothic sharp bob did a 360 in the hair shade spectrum and dyed her moody, much-loved black hair platinum blonde for New York fashion week.

Proving herself to be the ultimate celebrity hair chameleon, Leigh, a natural blonde, has swapped from black to blonde numerous of times over the past few years and now she's back to blonde.

And it's no wonder, Leigh spilled the beans on what it takes to keep those light roots under control: "My hair is naturally a bit fuzzy it's naturally curly and blonde.

"My roots get crazy. I dye it myself, every two weeks - every two in the summer, and three in the winter, with anything from the pharmacy. It's so bad for your hair to dye it that often."

RESULT: Anything goes with Leigh - she wears every shade well.
