Who's going to catch you?

Unemployment is rising steadily as the economic crisis continues. Although accounting historically has been a secure profession, there are no job guarantees anywhere. Many of us have clients, friends or family members who have been through a lay-off or closed business. Fortunately, OSCPA members who are unemployed or are contemplating a job transition can turn to The Ohio Society of CPAs for help.

OSCPA membership provides a safety net of benefits and services that are especially helpful during hard times:

* Skills and knowledge training

* Access to experts

* Connection with peers

* A robust Career Center

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TRAINING

The knowledge and skills available to us through OSCPA membership can mean the difference between success and failure on the job. At a minimum, staying up-to-date on changing requirements is necessary to maintain compliance. Tax, audit and filing requirements change regularly. Failing to comply can result in costly fines and possibly job loss. The Ohio Society offers education and training courses with the latest information on important changes and how they impact your job. These effective and efficient courses help you get the most out of your time and money. If you end up having to pay for your own CPE, the member discount becomes even more important.

ACCESS TO EXPERTS

The Ohio Society also provides direct access to national speakers and experts through a variety of venues. Conferences and seminars feature top experts on topics that impact your work. Custom courses are available through the Society's on-site training program which brings the experts to your doorstep on the topics you choose.

Members of the Society's tax section can get answers to their tax questions from national tax expert Lynn Nichols, CPA. The listserv function of the special interest sections also lets members ask fellow members for answers to the tricky questions we're confronted with every day. Plus, section members receive a weekly electronic newsletter with stories targeted to their interests. Read more about the benefits of section membership on page 52.

CONNECTION WITH PEERS

It is often true that who you know is as important as what you know. Through volunteering on committees or engaging in networking events, OSCPA members connect with other area professionals--and possible future colleagues. Membership in The Ohio Society provides immediate access to a thriving network of relevant contacts. For example, staffing best practices have become a big topic of discussion for my firm. The contacts I've made through my involvement with The Ohio Society serve as a valuable sounding board as my firm works to recruit and retain quality talent throughout the business cycle.

CAREER CENTER SUPPORT

If you are looking for a job or looking to hire, the OSCPA Career Center connects you with the right people. Job seekers post resumes that potential employers can browse to find the right candidate. Practical career information is also available to help you in your search, whether it is for a job or quality candidates.

YOUR SAFETY NET

The Ohio Society of CPAs is your safety net in uncertain times. Use this valuable resource to stay on top of your game. For more information on any of the benefits available to you as a member contact CPanswers, the member service center, at 888.959.1212.
