Who's Who in Top 100 Companies - 1998.

The following pages include life sketches of 11 executives managing the affairs of top companies appearing in our various tables being published in this issue.

Mr. Munnawar Hamid is Chief Executive of ICI Pakistan Ltd. After graduating with Honours from the Universities of Punjab and Cambridge, he joined ICI Pakistan in 1968 in Chemical Sales. After a series of first line and middle management assignments, he was appointed General Manager Personnel of the Company in 1983 and was elevated as executive director in 1993. He is also the Chairman of ICI Pakistan PowerGen, a wholly owned subsidiary of ICI Pakistan, a Director of United Bank Ltd. Chairman (designate) of the ICI Pakistan/Dupont USA Joint Venture Company under formation in Pakistan, Secretary of the Karachi Chapter of the Oxford and Cambridge Society in Pakistan, a Governor of the National Management Foundation a Trustee of the ICI Pakistan Foundation, a Member of the Management Committee of Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Vice President of the Pakistan Society for Training and Development and a Trustee of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. He was awarded the Order of he British Empire (OBE) i n 1997. He has recently chaired the Prime Minister's Committee on Chemical Industry in Pakistan.

Munnawar Hamid - Chief Executive, ICI Pakistan Ltd.

Mr. Rafi Iqbal Ahmad, Director & General Manager, Packages Limited, Lahore born in 1943. Joined Packages in 1965 after graduating from the University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore. Worked his way up in Production Planning Cell to Production Manager in 1980. During this time, on secondment for 2 years, he was given the responsibility of General Manager of a Packaging Plant - Kobo Paper Industries in Tanzania. He is also the Director of a multi-national Company Tetra Pak (Pakistan) Limited and Member Board of Governors of the National Management foundation. During the last 35 years with Packages Limited he not only worked on production projects, but also Packages reinforced his knowledge on management side. Packages Limited today produces 60,000 tonnes of Pulp & Paper Board from Agricultural by-products and converts the same into packaging material for the consumer industry of Pakistan. It employees over 2900 workers and its turn over is around Rs.4 billion.

Sayed Muzafar Ali Shah, Senior Additional Secretary to Government of Pakistan and Chairman. PIC, is a senior Civil Servant with 37 years of vast and varied experience of Private, Public and Government Sectors. He has brilliant academic record having always secured FIRST CLASS FIRST position and Chancellor's Gold Medal for Academic Achievements. lie is also holder of three other Gold Medal for professional achievements and social services. He has declared man of the year, 1995 by the American Biographical Institute, Inc., USA. He has held many important field and staff appointments - in various organisations of repute. He is concurrently Directors on the Board of Directors of The KESC, PICIC, NIT, Philips Electrical Co. Ltd. & Reckitt & Colman and also serves on the syndicate of NED University Engg. & Technology, Karachi and University of Engg. Sciences & Technology, Nawabshah. He is affiliated with many professional institutions and bodies such as Economic Development Institute of the World Bank, Washington D .C., USA, Institution of Engineers Pakistan, Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers of Pakistan, Society for International Development etc.

Tariq Ikram Minister of State & Chairman Export Promotion Bureau is a highly educated person. After B.Sc. he got Masters in English Literature and than completed various academic and training courses from abroad. He joined Reckitt & Colman of Pakistan Ltd. in Jan. 1970 straight after College. Progressed in the Marketing Function through to General Management and then Regional Management of countries covering at different times from Bangladesh to Egypt in North Africa including Sri Lanka, India. UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran. Iraq, CIS countries etc. he got Management Experience of over 3 decades. Another feather in his cap is that he is the first Pakistani to be appointed as CEO of R&C in Pakistan at age 37 years. He held various positions like President Overseas Chamber of Commerce and Industries Karachi 1995-96, Past President Marketing Association of Pakistan, Past President Management Association of Pakistan, Founder. Chairman Advertisers Society of Pakistan (Present), Governor Institute of Business Admn. (IBA Kyc. Present), Director KESC 1995-96, Trustee KPT 1995-96, Founder Member Pakistan Research Society.

Mr. Sohail Wajahat H. Siddiqui is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Siemens Pakistan Engineering Company Limited, He holds a Masters Degree in Electronics Engineering from the University of London and has served Siemens Pakistan on several important positions which include General Manager Products and Services Division and head of factory in SITE Karachi. Prior to his appointment as Managing Director and CEO Sohail Wajahat has undergone a special training programme at Siemens AG. in Germany.

Lieutenant General Zia Ullah Khan (Retd), HI(M), is the Chief Executive and Managing Director of the Company. He was commissioned in Pakistan Army in 1962 and is a graduate of Command and Staff College and National Defence College, the two premier institutions of the Armed Forces of Pakistan. As a lieutenant General he commanded a Corps. He retired as an Adjutant General in March 1997 after completion of distinguished and meritorious service. Lieutenant General Zia, because of his vast and varied experience was appointed as the Chief Executive and Managing Director of Fauji Fertilizer Company Limited (FFC). FFC is the largest urea producer in Pakistan. It has outshone its compatriots in corporate image and inspite of international recession, it is maintaining its profitability growth.

Mr. Muhammad Saleem, Executive Vice President and Regional Chief of Fateh Textile Mills Limited, by profession is a Cost & Management Accountant of Pakistan. He was awarded First Class First Position in Part-IV examination (Advance Cost & Management Accounting) of ICMAP. He has 25 years of rich experience, abroad as well as Pakistan in Finance. Banking and Administration, lie joined Fateh Textile Mills Limited in 1989 as Group Chief Accountant and MIS Manager. He has taken over the position of Regional Chief in the year 1995. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of numerous sister concern of Fateh Group.

Lieutenant General Khalid Nawaz Malik (Retired) is the Managing Director Mari Gas Co. Ltd. During his 37 years of military career, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant General, through sheer hard work, dedication and proven ability to lead. He was awarded Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military). He held Very important command, staff and instructional positions and attended various local and foreign courses. He is a thorough professional, a keen student of military history and a veteran of the 1965 and 1971 Wars. Lt. Gen. Khalid is a graduate from both Command and Staff College, Quetta and Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, USA. He did his M.Sc. in War Studies from the National Defence College. With rich experience in management and leadership he is steering the Company towards further progress.

Khalid Nawaz Malik (Retd.) - Managing Director, Mari Gas Co. Ltd.

Mr. Zaffar A. Khan is the President and CEO of Engro Chemical Pakistan Ltd. He graduated as a Mechanical Engineer in 1967 from Engineering College, Peshawar and soon thereafter began his career with Esso Pakistan Fertilizer Company Ltd. which was later renamed Exxon Chemical Pakistan Ltd. and is presently known as Engro Chemical Pakistan Ltd. During his years with the Company he has worked in all major divisions, namely Marketing, Manufacturing, Finance & Corporate Services. Aside from working with the Company in Pakistan, he had 10 years on assignment with Exxon Chemical overseas in Hong Kong, USA and Singapore. He was trained with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan in Engineering Disciplines, has attended Exxon's Refinery Economics Course, Advanced Management Program at tile University of Hawaii and Mergers & Acquisitions Program at INSEAD, France. He was the Co-Chairman of the OICCI Standing Committee for Environment 1996-97. He is also a member of the 1997-98 Executive Committee of the Management Associ ation of Pakistan.

Mr. Salman Burney is a young and articulated person who assumed the position of Managing Director of SmithKline Beecham (SB) in Pakistan. He joined SB Pakistan in 1992 as Director Marketing and Sales from ICI where he was holding the position of General Manager Agro-Chemical business. He held various senior management positions during his 14-year tenure with ICI. Since joining SB, Salman Burney has made a significant contribution to the growth and development of the company's business. His focus now is on identification of new business initiatives for new markets, products and services and within the next four to five years to further develop the consumer healthcare division and to sustain and improve the pharmaceutical product lines which would result in further enhancing SmithKline Beecham's position in Pakistan. Salman Burney is a Tripos in Economics from Trinity College, University of Cambridge. He is married and has a daughter and a son.

Mr. A. Razzak A. Aziz Tabba - is the Chairman and Chief Executive of Gadoon Textile Mills Ltd. He is a commerce graduate of 55 years old leading personality in the field of business having more than 35 years of rich experience in trading, export and industrial management. A. Razzak at present managing several businesses which includes Yunus Brothers, which is the largest export house of textile products from Pakistan and having distinction of receiving President's Export Trophy for seven consecutive years. He has acquired in depth experience of business and industrial management. Presently he is occupying the positions in the various Groups of Companies like Fazal Textile Mills Ltd., Lucky Energy Ltd., Lucky Cement Ltd., Lucky Power Tech Ltd., Lucky Textile Mills, and Security Investment Bank Ltd.
