Where to find fractals*.

Where to Find Fractals "Fractals", the term coined by IBM mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot for branching, twisting organic shapes found in nature and/or generated by computers from certain equations, are now a computer "hot topic". To keep you abreast of recent developments in this field, we've compiled a list of resources in this column.

Some new fractal journals include The Journal of Chaos and Graphics, a new occasional journal covering all sorts of mathematically based visual wildness, edited by a leading researcher. Amygdala, a newsletter for people interested in the Mandelbrot Set, includes short articles, reviews of fractal generating software, and a fractal bibliography. Recent articles: "Fractal Arts--Combining Music, Math, and Art," by Brian Evans, in The Futurist, May-June 1988. Discover how a University of Illinois doctoral student used "Marie Sets" to create a music animation piece that used an algorithm to generate sound and visual materials in Portraits of Equations, by Ivars Peterson. Read a discussion of graphics generated by IBM mathematician Clifford A. Pickover in such areas as dynamical systems and transcendental functions in Science News (September 19, 1987).
