Where is spot!

Using a set of seven cards with faces of family members on them, you can tell a story about the Goofus family looking for their lost, pet dog, Spot. As you spell the name of each family member, you move cards from the top to the bottom of the packet and then place a card face up on the table. Finally, you are left with just one card. Yes, it is Spot.

Preparation: Make a photo copy of the seven cards on the next page. Cut them out, color the pictures with colored pencils, and paste them onto seven old playing cards or pieces of cardboard. Stack the cards face down as follows: 1. Granny, 2. Poppa, 3. Junior, 4. Sister, 5. Spot, 6. Baby, 7. Mommy. Granny is the bottom card. Mommy is the top card.

Presentation: Hold the cards faces up and show a few of the cards, keeping them in order. But, do not show the Spot card. Now hold the cards in your left hand, faces down. The top card will be the Mommy card. The card against your hand will be the Granny card.

"This is the Goofus Family," you say. "They can't find their dog, Spot. Granny looked ..." Spell the word Granny. As you do, remove one card for each letter from the top of the face-down packet and slide it onto the bottom of the packet, keeping it face down. "G ... R ... A ... N ... N ... Y." After you have placed the "Y" card oil the bottom of the packet, turn the next card face up on the table. It will be the Granny card.

"Poppa looked." Spell the word Poppa, moving one card from the top of the packet to the bottom for each letter. "P ...O ...P ...P ...A." Turn the next card, the Poppa card, face up. Repeat this for the Mommy card, for the Sister card, the Junior card, and the Baby card. This will leave you with one face-down card in your hand.

"Where's Spot?" you ask. "Right here," you say, and turn the last card, the Spot card, face up and drop it on the table.
