When the Rainbow Touches Down.

WHEN THE RAINBOW TOUCHES DOWN. Tryntje Van Ness Seymour. Seattle, WA: University of Washington Press, 1989. 394 pp., illustrated, $50.00.

This handsome book is neither an art historical survey nor an anthropological analysis of Southwest Indian tribes. It is, rather, a highly personal narrative about a group of paintings through the eyes, hands and minds of the artists themselves. As they comment about their work, the prominent Native American artists share the goal of recording a way of life on paper and, through that, creating a better understanding of Native American lifeways and values. The Denmans, who assembled the collection of work in this volume, also share this goal. They hoped not only to support the artists, but also to promote a greater understanding of and respect for the native peoples of the Southwest. When the Rainbow Touches Down offers teachers and students a chance to look at the art within the art, to reflect on the artistic traditions of the artists whose work is illustrated, and to consider the role of art in their own lives as well as in the ceremonies and artifacts portrayed in the paintings.

This is a most unique resource and one that middle and high school students are sure to enjoy. It is highly recommended!
