When heads really did roll.

SEVEN speakers have been beheaded and one murdered in a job that brings a new meaning to political bloodletting.

The deaths came in the years before 1560 - and it was to be more than 100 years before another was booted out. In 1695, Sir John Trevor was thrown out of office for taking a 1000 guinea bribe.

When a new Speaker is chosen, he or she makes a show of reluctance and has to be dragged to the chair. This is because of the dire fate that has befallen some Speakers.
