What to look out for.

Meningitis is a swelling of the lining around the brain and spinal cord. Septicaemia is blood poisoning caused by the same germs. They can occur together or separately.

Symptoms of meningitis include severe headache, stiff neck, dislike of bright lights, fever/vomiting, drowsiness and rash. Symptoms for septicaemia include rash, fever, cold hands/feet or shivering, rapid breathing, stomach or muscle aches and pains and drowsiness.

In babies, there are other symptoms: a tense or bulging soft spot on their head, blotchy skin which pales or turns blue, refusal to feed, irritability, a high-pitched or moaning cry, a stiff body with jerky movements or a floppy and lifeless body.
