What lab managers earned in 1990

Laboratory managers' salaries in the nation's largest hospitals increased a hefty 8.6 per cent in 1990.

The average annual salary for lab managers in hospitals with 2,200 or more FTEs was $54,500, according to the "1990 Management Compensation Study" recently issued by the American Hospital Association. In hospitals of all sizes, lab managers' salaries increased an average of 5.7 per cent this year, a half percentage point better than the average increase of 5.2 per cent for all hospital executives.

Additionally, laboratory managers maintained their relatively high standing, at least in the larger hospitals, against the salaries of their peers. The survey findings, published in Hospitals magazine,(1) again placed laboratory managers second in salary to pharmacy directors among the eight management categories of patient care services in hospitals (see Table I).

In the smaller hospitals - those with under 600 FTEs - laboratory managers fared less well but showed improvement. Their salaries climbed to fourth place among the eight managers measured, ahead of the managers of radiology, respiratory therapy, social services, and outpatient services. Last year lab managers ranked fifth in these facilities.

In the midsize institutions - those with 600 to 1,199 FTEs - lab managers remained in third place, ahead of all managers except pharmacy directors and assistant directors of nursing. In the two largest hospital groups, lab managers were second only to pharmacy directors.

It should be noted that in this survey nursing service directors were not grouped with lab managers: They were placed in the top management category, not shown in Table I. The average salaries for nursing service directors for the five hospital sizes were $45,800, $55,200, $64,700, $74,700, and $86,700 - considerably surpassing lab managers across the board.

Laboratory managers continued to outearn a number of managers in other job categories. In most hospitals, they made more this year than directors of personnel, medical records, nursing education/training, purchasing, reimbursement/budget planning, food/dietary services, and blic relations. They earned less than the controller and directors of management information systems, property/facility management, marketing, and planning/development. And lab managers came out about equal to the directors of engineering services and materials management in 1990 compensation.
