What about Bert and Ernie?

Lake View Presbyterian Church in Chicago made known its views on the controversial, same-sex hand-holding, cartoon sea creature SpongeBob SquarePants.

SpongeBoh was recently the center of a media brouhaha over his appearance in a video shown to elementary school children to promote tolerance of different kinds of people, a video the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family says promotes the gay lifestyle. In his popular cartoon SpongeBob is frequently seen holding hands with his starfish friend, Patrick.

The United Church of Christ released a statement in support of SpongeBob, too, saying, "Jesus' message of extravagant welcome extends to all, including SpongeBob Squarepants."
