What'sOn: Star cast for horror; Bollywood.

VERDICT: *****

YOU'LL know the phrase too many cooks spoil the broth, but here's something different: too many Bollywood directors can spoil the plot!

In Darna Zaroori Hai (Is Being Scared Necessary?) talented Bollywood producer/director Ram Gopal Varma ropes in six directors for six short episodes of one long Bollywood horror movie.

Adventurous Varma casts one of the largest number of popular Bollywood stars seen together on the silver screen.

The impressive list includes Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Bipashu Basu, Ritesh Deshmukh, Sunil Shetty, Rajpal Yadav and many more.

And the six episodes? In one you have a hallucinating Professor who imagines people in his house and office, in another a robust film buff dies of a heart attack outside a graveyard.

Other stories feature a talented filmmaker wanting to change genres midway through shooting a film, a thief who attempts to rob a young couple, a group of five children who are plagued by a mysterious and dangerous old woman and an innocent man wrongly arrested and convicted for murder.

Varma is one of Bollywood's extroverts' and one of the industry's most talented, proven prospects.

He's also a master of horror movies but for the most part Darna Zaroori Hai only touches Varma's potential. The number of directors and stories robs it of momentum.

Bollywood has always had a fascination for horror but such films are rare because the industry churns out comedies, candy floss romances and action films.

Even when directors try horror, there are the usual cliches of lights suddenly going off, wind blowing, erratic camera movements and creaking doors. Compared to traditional Bollywood, Varma's film is superior - but only just.
