What's Up With Hunt?

Investment analysts have watched with interest as J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. of Lowell has taken steps to boost its bottom line.

Part of the restructuring involved a shift toward more joint ventures such as partnership with Burlington Northern Railroad.

A less rosy side of the move to improve margins involved employee layoffs.

In July, there was a round of cuts. We're not sure exactly how many Hunt employees lost their jobs.

In the midst of this, we've been hearing rumblings out of Lowell concerning Bryan Hunt's future role with the company.

There apparently is some serious disenchantment among several top executives at the company.

Hunt's parents have scaled back their banking interests, and Bryan has less to do these days.

We tried without success to reach Kirk Thompson, president and chief executive officer, for his perspective. We assume he'll just write us a heated letter to the editor like he did following our last Hunt story.

We were told Bryan Hunt was out of the state, if not the country.

Wayne Garrison, a familiar face at J.B. Hunt, has been taking a more active role again.

Garrison, you might remember, is vice chairman of the board as well as a major stockholder. He's also a former president, former chief operating officer and former son-in-law of J.B. Hunt.

Corporate outsiders, who applaud the company for hunkering down fiscally, view Garrison's increased involvement as a plus.
