What's this pain in my heel?



Acute pain in both of your heels when you walk, you''ve recently been taking a lot of weight-bearing exercise, such as training for a marathon or fun run.

Soreness and swelling around the ankle and heel as a result of going over on your ankle when exercising. There''s a tender spot on the outside of the ankle.

Sudden pain on the back of your heel after running and jumping, tenderness in the tendon which runs from the back of your leg and attaches to the back of your heel.

It could be:

Plantar fasciitis, inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is a thin ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot, supporting the arch of your foot and helping you to walk.

A sprain where some fibres of the ligaments, particularly the lateral ligament, of the ankle gets torn causing accumulation of fluid and swelling.

Achilles tendonitis, where sudden or unusual continuous movement inflames the sheath that covers the Achilles tendon.

Stop it:

See your doctor and you may need referral to an orthopaedic specialist for strapping, possibly a steroid injection, electrical therapy and the fitting of foot supports.

Most sprains aren't serious and will get better with firm supporting bandaging and rest. If not better in three days see your doctor.

Stop exercising. Rest your foot otherwise the tendon might tear. Take painkillers. See your doctor in case you need specific treatment. Use icepacks to decrease swelling and a compressing elastic bandage to prevent heel movement. You may need a steroid injection.
