Western growers seek donations to create school gardens. (Fundraising).

The Western Growers Charitable Foundation (WGCF), Irvine, California, has launched an ambitious fundraising campaign to raise $6 million to create gardens in every California and Arizona school. Launched in January, the "Growing With Children" campaign seeks to fight the problem of childhood obesity by promoting the link between nutrition and food production. "By placing this valuable learning resource in each school, we're hoping that [children] will find an appreciation for our society's agrarian roots and learn how their food is produced," says A.G. Kawamura, WGCF chairman. "The obvious benefits of eating healthier foods is a win for both kids and our industry."

The organization has teamed up with several state agencies and associations, including the National Gardening Association, South Burlington, Vermont, and the California Department of Education. The 3,500 members of the Western Growers Association grow, pack, and ship nearly one half of the nation's fresh produce.
