Drug delivery company West Pharmaceutical Services Inc (NYSE:WST) reported on Wednesday the commercial availability of its ID Adapter to improve the reliability and performance of intradermal injections for vaccines and other injectable drugs.
The company stated that it has completed the product development and first phase of commercial scale-up at its manufacturing centre in Arizona. It has received 510K clearance for the ID Adapter from the United States Food and Drug Administration.
According to the company, the ID adapter will complement its portfolio of prefilled syringe offerings and technologies, conserve the supply of high-value vaccines, provide patients significant benefit through more reliable injection and will provide an alternative to the Mantoux method, the industry standard for intradermal injection since 1907.
Additionally, the company said that the Mantoux method is accomplished by inserting the needle into the skin at a very shallow angle. It requires extensive training and experience to perform correctly and consistently, whereas the ID Adapter enables this process to be carried out more easily and with greater reliability.
