Wessex Garages gets behind George Thomas Hospice Care.
A CARDIFF-BASED charity has this year (2015) been receiving support from an award-winning motor dealership in the city after it was chosen as the company's Charity of the Year.
Throughout 2015 staff at Wessex Garages have been fundraising for George Thomas Hospice Care, which provides specialist home-based palliative care for people suffering from cancer and other lifethreatening illness.
Gareth Howells, general manager at Wessex Garages, in Hadfield Road, explained: "George Thomas Hospice Care do such a great job supporting local people and their families at such a difficult time. The charity was established in 1984 and has helped more than 24,000 patients and their families in Cardiff.
"George Thomas Hospice Care is committed to personal dignity, quality of life and the highest possible standards of care and service.
"So far this year we have organised a number of fundraisers in aid of the organisation. In January we hosted the Great Wessex Bake Off. The standard of baking was high, with entries such as white chocolate cheesecake, chocolate orange brownies and salted caramel cheesecake. We were delighted the event raised PS220 for the charity.
"In March, 13 members of staff raised PS512 after taking part in the George Thomas Hospice Care Charity 5K Run in fancy dress. A great group achievement. Matt Llewelyn Jones, our digital sales executive at the dealership, jumped out of a plane in September and managed to raise a staggering PS600. Matt enjoyed it so much he is planning to do another skydive.
"We also donate all of the money from our coffee machine at the dealership to the charity. We raised an amazing PS857 from February to May from the coffee machine. This fundraiser will continue until the end of the year.
"We are also sponsoring an award at the George Thomas Hospice Golf Tournament on Thursday, October 15. It is called the Wessex Garages Cup, which is awarded to the individual with the best aggregate score."
George Thomas Hospice Care services are provided free of charge. It offers a number of services at its hospice centre based in Whitchurch Hospital grounds, however, much of its work takes place in its patients' homes. Referral to George Thomas Hospice Care is usually arranged by the patient's GP, hospital doctor, district nurse, care manager or social worker.
Gareth added: "So far this year we are delighted to announce that we have managed to raise more than PS3,000 for George Thomas Hospice Care. We hope to make it up to PS5,000 by the end of 2015.
"The charity is such a vital lifeline for so many people and their families.
We are so glad we can help the charity continue its work."
