WellSpan adding urgent-care, family medicine offices.

Byline: Ioannis Pashakis

WellSpan Health recently purchased three urgent-care centers in York County from a Maryland company and plans to reopen two of them this summer under its own banner.

One will remain an urgent-care centers, a second will be converted into a family medicine practice and plans are still pending for the third.

WellSpan bought the three urgent care-centers from Bel Air, Maryland-based ExpressCare Urgent Care Centers. The terms were not disclosed.

The centers are in Shrewsbury, East Manchester Township and Windsor Township.

The East Manchester facility will reopen this summer as WellSpan Urgent Care, while the Windsor Township facility will reopen in September as an office of WellSpan Family Medicine. It will offer primary care, preventative care, annual physical exams, women's health care, treatment of short-term illnesses, flu shots and immunizations.

WellSpan has yet to announce its plans for the former Shrewsbury ExpressCare Urgent Care Center.

The system expects to spend $200,000 each of renovations for the East Manchester and Windsor facilities.

WellSpan will also be opening an urgent-care facility at the former South York Diner in York Township this September. The building was chosen because of its visibility from Interstate 83 but renovations will cost about $2.4 million, according to Ryan Coyle, WellSpan's senior media relations specialist.

The two urgent care centers will be the system's fifth and sixth locations in York County and the eighth and ninth locations spread throughout Adams, Lancaster and York Counties.

"That is simply part of our broader approach to make sure people don't have to go far from their home to receive care," Coyle said. "We want to make it as easy as possible for patients to receive the care they need without having to drive very far."

The three new facilities overall are expected to employ 12 to 15 staff members and eight health care providers. Coyle said that some former ExpressCare employees will be taking jobs at the new WellSpan locations but would not say how many.
