Welcome investment.

MANY people in the region may struggle to understand how a company largely owned by the German government can be handed a contract to run parts of the Tyne and Wear Metro system.

But travellers will still be grateful that trains, stations and ticket machines are to be improved on the back of that deal. The sums involved are impressive too.

Hopefully, this will presage a new era of investment in infrastructure.

Good communications are as vital for the commercial and social health of the North East, as they are for the nation.
