Weihenstephan beers arrive in U.S.

Beer from the world's oldest brewery is now available in the United States. Weihenstephan beers, produced by the famous Bayerische Staatsbrauerei (the state brewery of Bavaria) are being imported by the Bavaria House Corporation of Wilmington, NC.

The first container of Weihenstephan arrived in December, 1992, and the brands already enjoy distribution in the Carolinas. Bavaria House is seeking distributors in other areas, and will showcase its beer at the NBWA fall convention in Las Vegas.

Bavaria House will import four brands: Weihenstephan Original, which is described as a full-flavored premium lager beer; Weihenstephan Weizenbier Crystal Clear, a clear wheat beer; Weihenstephan Hefe-Weisbeer, a Bavarian-style wheat beer with yeast and Weihenstephan Hefe-Weissbeer Dark, a dark wheat with yeast. The brands will be offered in four packs of 17-oz. bottles.

The historical pedigree of the Weihenstephan beers is well founded. It is reported that production of beer at Weihenstephan (which is somewhat north of Munich) began in 1040, and a monastery at the site continued the brewing tradition until relatively modern times. The brewery was eventually secularized and taken over by the state, and now operates as a commercial venture. The noted German brewing college is also located in Weihenstephan, and enjoys close ties with the state brewery.
