Drawing on a review of current literature and independent analysis of existing databases, this report reexamines the 1990 Institute of Medicine guidelines for weight gain during pregnancy. The report presents updated target ranges for weight gain during pregnancy and guidelines for proper measurement, and includes a range of recommended gain specifically for obese women. The guidelines are intended for American women and women in other developed countries, but are not intended for use in areas of the world where women are substantially shorter or thinner than American women or where adequate obstetric services are not available.
