Weight Watchers' prolific new products range from spicy Mexican fare to pizza.

Weight Watchers Food Co. is no lightweight when it comes to introducing new recipes. No fewer than 21 frozen products were unveiled in the USA during February and March.

"Even in a crowded healthy food market, consumers still want more variety. Every new product launch is in response to a specific consumer demand," said Brian Ruder, president and chief executive officer of the Pittsburgh, Pa.-headquartered affiliate of H.J. Heinz Co.

Here's what has found its way into retail stores lately:

* A trio of Mexican-style frozen entrees in the traditional white box line sell for $2.59. The 8.3- to 9-ounce packs feature Nacho Grande Chicken Enchiladas, Grilled Chicken Suiza and Tex-Mex Chicken with Spanish Rice. Calorie counts range from 220 to 280, notwithstanding the sour cream sauce with cheese and spicy barbeque that tops off the latter two meals.

* Five varieties join the Smart Ones sub-brand of extremely low fat (one gram or less) entrees that have sold nearly one million cases since debuting in 1992. They are Chicken Marsala, Honey Mustard Chicken, Chicken A L'Orange, Grilled Glazed Chicken and Ravioli Florentine. Retail price is $2.19.

* Three re-formulated six-ounce pizzas were brought out under the Brick Oven Style Pizza sub-line. Pepperoni, Deluxe Combo and Three Cheese, each retailing for $2.59, now feature a zestier sauce and a crust that reportedly stays crispy even in microwave ovens. Pizza Bianca is brand new. The 5.4-ounce offering with olive oil, Italian seasoning, diced tomatoes and mozzarella cheese sells for $1.99.

* On the dessert front, $1.99-priced Sweet Celebrations Toasted Almond Amaretto Cheesecake, Chocolate Irish Cream-flavored Cake, and Triple Chocolate Cheesecake began shipping Feb. 1. New Frozen Novelties are Berries 'N Cream Mousse Bars ($3.19 per 12-pack), Chocolate Almond Crunch Bars and Crispy Pralines'N Creme Bars.
